Medical center is top employer in county

The Ellis County Coalition for Economic Development compiles a list of the top employers in Ellis County.

The following are the top 20 employers as of May 2000, ranked by total employees.

­ Hays Medical Center, with 1,000 full-time and 200 part-time employees. HMC recently completed a $28.5 million expansion project.

­ Hays USD 489, with 639 full-time and 164 part-time employees. The public school systems operates one high school, two middle schools and seven elementary schools.

­ Fort Hays State University, with 700 full-time and 100 part-time employees (excluding students). The only regent university in western Kansas, it has an enrollment of about 5,600 students.

­ Sykes Enterprises Inc., with 425 full-time and 136 part-time employees. Sykes typically employs a large number of college students as customer service support technicians. Sykes offers phone-in technical support for a line of computer equipment.

­ Yuasa Inc., with 340 full-time employees. The manufacturer produces sealed lead acid batteries used as stand-by power sources for security systems, emergency lighting, hospital equipment, computers and other devices.

­ Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas, with 169 full-time and 134 part-time employees. The agency provides services to people with disabilities in an 18-county area.

­ Wal-Mart, with 162 full-time and 102 part-time employees at its retail store in Hays. A Supercenter under construction north of Interstate 70 is scheduled to open in the fall and will add 200 employees.

­ Adronics/Elrob Manufacturing Inc., with 182 full-time and 51 part-time employees. The company manufactures components for the automobile industry.

­ Ellis County, with 167 full-time and 37 part-time employees in county government.

­ Dillon Food Store, 1902 Vine, with 51 full-time and 129 part-time employees.

­ Hays, with 159 full-time and 26 part-time employees in city government.

­ Central Plains Laboratories, with 132 full-time and 28 part-time employees. The former Hays Pathology Laboratories was acquired by Hays Medical Center.

­ High Plains Mental Health Center, with 129 full-time and 14 part-time employees. It provides mental health services throughout northwest Kansas.

­ Hays International Mailing, with 120 full-time and 1 part-time employee. The company prints and distributes mass mailings for clients.

­ A-1 Plank and Scaffold Manufacturing Inc., with 109 full-time and 4 part-time employees, produces a line of scaffolding.

­ Midwest Energy Inc., with 108 full-time and 5 part-time employees. The consumer-owned cooperatives markets electricity, natural gas and propane throughout central and western Kansas.

­ Allied, with 109 full-time employees, is a concrete and asphalt paving contractor.

­ Applebee´s Neighborhood Grill & Bar, with 40 full-time and 65 part-time employees at its Hays restaurant.

­ Good Samaritan Center of Hays, with 54 full-time and 26 part-time employees.

­ Ellis USD 388, Ellis, with 47 full-time and 24 part-time employees. The public school system operates a high school and grade school.
