Water use is restricted in
Hays
The city of Hays enacted a
water conservation system to ensure an adequate water supply
for the future. Those restrictions include:
- The city of Hays uses an allocation method of allotting water
based on the number of people residing in a home or apartment.
The monthly allotment is 200 cubic feet per person, plus an allotment
of 300 cubic feet per household during the months of October
through March. An additional 500 cubic feet per household is
allocated for the months of April through September.
A customer may use more than the allotted water, however, there
will be a surcharge added to the monthly bill for all usage over
the allotment. The surcharge rate is: 25 percent for 100 to 1,000
cubic feet over allotment; 50 percent for 1,100 to 2,000 and
over; and 100 percent for 2,100 cubic feet and over.
Surcharges are not refundable except in the case of a leak. Proof
of repair of the leak must be provided in order to receive a
refund.
- Outside watering - including car washing - is allowed all year,
but from June 1 though Sept. 30, outside water usage is prohibited
between noon and 7 p.m. It is unlawful to waste water in the
city of Hays, and offenders will be prosecuted in Municipal Court.
The use of water for washing down buildings, sidewalks and other
hard surfaced areas is prohibited. Over watering of lawns and
allowing water to run down the curb is also prohibited.
- Watering permits for newly seeded lawns may be issued to allow
residents to water between the hours of noon and 7 p.m. from
June 1 through Sept. 30. This permit does not allow any additional
water to the allocation, and a surcharge will be assessed if
usage is over the allotment. Permits can be obtained in the city
clerk's office or by calling (785) 628-7300.
- Ultra-low flow shower heads are available in the city clerk's
office. Customers can exchange existing shower heads for an ultra-low
flow shower head free of charge.
- Information on xeriscape landscaping, low water use plantings,
mulching and lawn maintenance is available from the Ellis County
Extension Office at 601 Main, Suite A. They can assist in grass
and shrubbery selections that have low water requirements.
